On Tuesday, former Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul took the oath of office to become New York's 57th governor and first female governor in the state's history.
The symbolism of her white attire indicates an homage to the suffragettes who fought to secure women's right to vote that was finally granted with the signing of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
She addressed New Yorkers Tuesday afternoon, outlining her top priorities that include directing the Board of Health to institute a mask mandate, and a COVID testing program for schools.
