A 2019 law set February 14th as the deadline for party enrollment changes.
Because this year February 14th falls on a Sunday, followed by the Presidents' Day holiday, the State Board of Elections urges voters to submit party enrollment changes by Friday, February 12th.
Voters with a valid DMV-issued ID or license can change their party online by refilling their voter registration on the DMV website: https://voterreg.dmv.ny.gov/. Voters without a DMV-issued ID or license can update their party affiliation by resubmitting a paper voter registration form. Voters can find the English form here, and the Spanish form here.
Due to New York's "closed primary" system, only registered party members can vote in primaries. In other words, Independents, Green Party, and Working Family Party members are excluded from this important step in selecting party nominees.
